15/05/2025

World of Warcraft is bringing back the Greedy Emissary event from Diablo, but this time with deeper story background featuring a dark alternative timeline of Azeroth. The event will be part of Patch 11.1.7 and will offer special rewards including a new color variant of Tyrael's Charger mount and additional variants of the renovated Tier 2 sets from WoW's 20th anniversary. The event's launch date hasn't been officially announced yet, but the PTR suggests it will run throughout July. 🔥⚔️

Diablo Returns with a New Story Foundation

World of Warcraft is preparing the return of the popular Greedy Emissary crossover event from the world of Diablo, which will be part of the post-launch content for patch 11.1.7. This time, however, it's not just about cosmetic rewards - Blizzard is adding elaborate lore to the event that connects both gaming universes in a way we haven't seen before.

Recently, World of Warcraft revealed Patch 11.1.7 subtitled Legacy of Arathor. This content update will bring:

  • Lorewalking - a renewed questing and leveling experience
  • A new story chapter set in the Arathi Highlands
  • Additional UI and accessibility options
  • And of course, the return of the Diablo crossover event

Mysterious Hellhunter Reveals Dark Timeline

As players were exploring Patch 11.1.7 on the Public Test Realm, well-known WoW content creator MrGM discovered a new character named Baranar, a Hellhunter associated with this event. On Twitter, he shared this NPC's dialogue, which offers a fascinating glimpse into an alternative timeline of Azeroth.

Baranar explains that he comes from an alternative version of Azeroth where things developed much darker:

  • Hellfire and plague consumed the land
  • The Forces of Light forsook the world's inhabitants in the name of justice
  • Fandral Staghelm became a hero by harnessing the power of hellfire
  • Malfurion was apparently fused with a demon of disease, becoming Malfisto - a monster who rotted Nordrassil and the forests of Mount Hyjal from within
"In my world, the Light forsook us. Hellfire and plague consumed everything... in the end, it was Staghelm who found a way to use the power of hell against itself." - Baranar, Hellhunter

Connecting the Worlds of WoW and Diablo

World of Warcraft has plenty of alternative timelines, many of which are rather dark, but this one is obviously inspired by the world of Diablo. Sanctuary, the world of Diablo, is a battleground between the forces of Heaven and Hell, with humans often caught in their crossfire.

The way the Light forsook the Hellhunters' world reflects the mindset of the Angels from Sanctuary. The demon Malfisto is a clear reference to Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred known from Diablo 4. Meanwhile, Staghelm finds a more heroic version of his transformation into a Druid of the Flame than in his villainous role in the main World of Warcraft timeline.

New Rewards You Can Earn

The returning Greedy Emissary event also brings several new rewards:

  • An Inarius recolor of the famous Tyrael's Charger mount
  • Additional color variants of the renovated Tier 2 sets from WoW's 20th anniversary celebrations

The exact method of obtaining these rewards is not yet clear, but fans can look forward to more information in the coming weeks.

When Can You Join the Event?

The official start date for the event has not yet been announced. However, the PTR currently indicates that the event will run throughout July.

World of Warcraft Patch 11.1.7 should arrive around June 17th. While these dates may change before the official announcement, it appears that WoW players have a summer full of activities ahead of them.

Why This Crossover Matters

This new approach to connecting the worlds of World of Warcraft and Diablo shows Blizzard's interest in deeper integration of their gaming universes. Unlike previous crossovers, which were more superficial and focused on cosmetic rewards, this event brings thoughtful connections between the lore of both worlds.

For fans of both franchises, it's an exciting opportunity to see what Azeroth might look like when influenced by the forces of Diablo, while also earning exclusive rewards inspired by both games.
